The history of the havana rabbit

The Havana rabbit breed began in the Netherlands in 1898 with a brilliant colour not seen before in other breeds. This chocolate coloured Havana would set the standards for the Havana rabbit breed that was introduced into the United States and accepted by the American Rabbit Breeder's Association (ARBA) in 1916.

The colour tone of the Havana rabbit's coat is rich with a shiny appearance and is accepted by ARBA in four color varieties. The original chocolate, the blue which was recognized in 1965 and also the black that was accepted in 1980 are the three more commonly seen varieties. More recently in 2007, a broken variety was accepted within the breed standard,

Here in the uk the havana is only reconised by the (BRC) the british rabbit council in the standard chocolate colour.
